Thank you for your work to reduce and replace the use of vertebrate animals in testing and thank you for asking for public feedback.

This Draft Strategy is an important step in reducing animal harm and putting Canada on track to be a leader in innovative animal free science.

To reach this objective, we as a country must invest in non-animal methods. We encourage dedicated and long-term funding to the Canadian Centre for Alternatives to Animal Methods (CCAAM) and recognition as the national hub for developing, validating, and promoting NAMs. The CCAAM has received no public funding to date and because of this, has recently shut down.

Please consider:
1. A plan to accelerate the regulatory acceptance of animal-free methods in toxicity testing.
2. A plan to support, regulate and encourage the release of eligible animals after study to experienced, reputable and recognized organizations in Canada, such as The Beagle Alliance.
3. Allocating funding to individuals and organizations who can and will move Canada towards the accepted use of animal free science.

Thank you again for requesting feedback.

Has hope for the animals in Canada been Deferred?

The government’s promise to phase out toxicity testing on animals by 2035 seems even farther off in the light of the impending closure of the Canadian Center for Alternatives to Animal Methods, due to the budget at the University of Windsor.

Toxicity testing represents some of the most extreme harm using animals. In 2022, over 100,000 animals were used in toxicity testing in Canada, including dogs – yet still fail to reliably predict human outcomes.

What does this mean?

It means that this is not simply an animal welfare issue, it is a societal issue and one that affects every single person in Canada.

It is now time for us to ask the government to support their promise with funding, however one of the issues is that most Canadians do not know that animal testing happens in Canada, and that there are innovative and humane methods that can be utilized.

Canada can be a leader in innovation and compassion for animals and instead we are falling further behind with this impending closure, however, this news does not have to be discouraging. This news can be the catalyst for us to voice our opinions during the impending Draft Strategy to Replace, Reduce or Refine Vertebrate Animal Testing under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act. This news must be the catalyst for awareness and change.

Here is how you can be heard:

  1. Scroll down and use our links to email about the Draft Study, we have some suggestions on what to focus on.
  2. Share on social media and talk about this with your peers.
  3. Register for the Animal Justice Academy Lunchtime Live with Dr. Charu Chandresekara, Executive Director and Founder of the CCAAM on Thursday, November 7th at 12pm ET Free Via Zoom – REGISTER HERE

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT – WE NEED SOME GOOD TROUBLE IN CANADA!

Health Canada & Environment and Climate Change Canada have just released the Draft Strategy to Replace, Reduce or Refine Vertebrate Animal Testing under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act.

They are asking for feedback before November 13, 2024, during the public consultation period.

An Opportunity to Speak Up & Be Heard!

We strongly encourage our supporters to have their voice heard and ask that you consider including your thoughts on:

  1. The plan to accelerate the regulatory acceptance of animal-free methods in toxicity testing.
  2. The plan to support, regulate and encourage the release of eligible animals after study to experienced, reputable and recognized organizations in Canada.
  3. Allocate funding to individuals and organizations who can and will move Canada towards the accepted use of animal free science.

This is a chance for us as Canadians to make a difference for animals and humans. In our opinion, this is a societal issue, not just an animal rights or animal welfare issue – the animal use model does not yield the results most people think it does and, in the process, harms animals.
