Beyond the Headlines: The Real Work Begins When They Come Home
There are headlines, celebrations, photographs, adoptions, and plans for the future. And while we celebrate every dog who has been given a fresh start, there is something we cannot lose sight of beneath it all.
The dogs.
Dogs who may have never known what it means to simply be a dog.
Some have never touched grass.
Some have never played with a toy.
Some have never lived in a home.
Some don’t yet understand stairs, doors, televisions, toys, or the strange and wonderful freedom of simply choosing where to walk.
They have been given a new beginning, one that can sometimes be confusing.
There can be fear. There can be shutdown. There can be anxiety. There can be behaviours that surprise even the most prepared adopter or foster. And sometimes, there can be frustration.
That is where the humans come in. Behind every former research dog is a person who has said, “Yes. I’ll take them.” That person may be an experienced foster, a first-time adopter, or part of a rescue organization that has never worked with former research dogs before.
They all need support.
And while there are many people and organizations working incredibly hard to support these dogs, We want to make sure we are supporting the people supporting them. We know you are the ones working and caring for the dogs day after day after sometimes sleepless, pee-filled nights.
This is something we know.
Lori Cohen of The Beagle Alliance, John Ramer of Kindness Ranch Sanctuary, and Chelsey Marino of Keeper and Kin have collectively worked with hundreds of former research beagles as they made the transition from laboratory life to homes, sanctuaries, and freedom.
We’ve seen the fear. We’ve seen the confusion. We’ve seen the breakthroughs.
And we’ve seen these dogs become the beagles they were always meant to be.
That experience matters.
We know many of you have been in it for months and we want to follow through, check in AND hear from new fosters and adopters, people who may foster or adopt AND organizations working to bring them home.
So we are bringing the community together once again for a free online experience and training evening focused on helping adopters, fosters, and organizations understand what comes next and HELPING THE DOGS move forward.
This isn’t about having all the answers. Please know we cannot possibly touch on everything, but we can be here and keep being here so that you know you are not alone. So bring your questions. Bring the things you’re struggling with. Bring the things you’re wondering if you should be concerned about.
We’ve got you.
Because the celebration of a dog’s release is only the beginning.
The real journey is helping that dog discover what freedom means.
And we intend to be there for the dogs, and for the incredible humans who have opened their doors to them, every step of the way.
