The Winnipeg Nightlife Award Community Impact Award recognizes remarkable organizations and individuals who have made significant contributions to their communities. This year's award, which celebrated its inaugural presentation, honoured the outstanding achievements of The Beagle Alliance. Through their relentless advocacy and rescue efforts, The Beagle Alliance is changing lives and inspiring others to join their mission to place former research dogs into loving homes and help advocate for animal free science.
The Community Impact category spotlighted several noteworthy contenders, each with a unique mission to drive positive change. Among the nominees were:
Deer Lodge Center Foundation
I Am Love Project
Event Sing
Ravbi Ravarant Ally Lo
NC College
Leonard Taylor
The Helios Restaurant
Joe Wright
Ultimately, it was The Beagle Alliance that captured the hearts of the judges and audiences with their compelling work and heartfelt impact.
The announcement of The Beagle Alliance as the winner was met with disbelief and joy by its members. In the words of Lori Cohen receiving the award:
"I can't believe it. I'm very surprised."
This sentiment highlights not only the emotion of the moment but also reflects the modesty often found in those who dedicate their lives to improving the world.
The Beagle Alliance is the only rescue and advocacy organization in Canada dedicated to animals in research. Each year, over 16,000 dogs and over 3 million animals are used in testing practices across Canada. Most of these animals, regrettably, face euthanasia after their use.
This sobering reality drives The Beagle Alliance's mission. In the absence of adequate legal protections for these animals, the organization steps up as their voice and champion. The group's advocacy doesn't stop at awareness; it extends to active rescue operations. By placing former research dogs into loving homes from testing facilities across the United States, and transporting them to safety in Canada, The Beagle Alliance plays a crucial role in altering destiny for these beautiful dogs.
As with any significant cause, a network of dedicated individuals helps bring the mission to life. The Beagle Alliance extends profound gratitude to the fosters who welcome these dogs, often sight unseen, into their homes. These animals commonly suffer from PTSD and anxiety due to their traumatic pasts, making the fosters' role as caregivers both pivotal and challenging.
"So I want to take a moment to thank the incredible fosters who take dogs sight unseen, who are traumatized with PTSD and anxiety, as well thank you to our donors and supporters."
The acknowledgment also extends to supporters and donors whose contributions fuel the organization's daily operations. Friends like Jennifer, who provide personal support, are also celebrated for their indispensable role in the cause.
The Beagle Alliance's mission transcends immediate impact; it aspires to create a legacy of compassion through education. By developing a humane educational program, they aim to inform future lawmakers, advocates, scientists, and consumers about cruelty-free shopping and compassionate consumerism.
Concluding their acceptance, Lori Cohen reflected on the journey and the organization's inherent gratitude:
"We're blessed. So thank you."
The Beagle Alliance's work is an embodiment of resilience, passion, and hope for a more humane future.
Inspired by The Beagle Alliance's story? There are numerous ways to contribute to this noble cause:
Volunteer as a foster: Transform the life of a rescued animal by offering your home as a refuge.
Become a donor: Financial contributions help fund rescues, care, and advocacy programs.
Spread awareness: Share The Beagle Alliance's mission and educate others on the importance of animal rights.
Engage in compassionate shopping: Choose cruelty-free products and support brands that align with ethical practices.
Together, we have the power to build a world where all creatures are treated with kindness and compassion and The Beagle Alliance's believes it begins with our collective love for dogs. Love can spark change for animals in research in Canada.
Please consider speaking with your MP about animal free science. These innovative methods have already proven to be more effective for humans, less expensive - and of course would save the lives of so many animals.
