Nives Ilic’s Story of Adopting Former Research Beagle Mack

Airdrie yard becomes gateway to freedom for 14 rescued beagles

Nives Ilic

The majority of people who choose to foster and then adopt a former research beagle do so because they define themselves as “beagle people.” Most are unaware that beagles are the most used breed of dog in research – they just want to help a beagle in need and believe me, they do, by offering up their home, their patience and their deep love.

Some adopters go on to become fierce advocates for dogs in research, many continue to share the story of transformation with our team and a few quietly go on to live out their days with a rescue dog whom they now adore – and who adores them.

Whichever they choose, our fosters, adopters and their dogs become family – and our heroes.

This is one story – Mack’s story, Nive’s story.

Our story is one that centres on our collective love for dogs – and how that love is sparking change for all animals in research in Canada!

We believe this story has just begun.

Despite spending the first six years of his life in a laboratory, Mack approached the world with kindness. His capacity for forgiveness and love was astonishing.

If these were our own companion animals, trapped in labs, we would do everything in our power to save them. That same moral urgency should guide us now. Every time we buy cosmetics, cleaning products or donate to charities, hospitals or universities, we should ask: Is my money supporting the suffering of innocent animals like Mack?…

Mack’s story shows dogs in labs are capable of love, curiosity and joy, yet their lives are stolen for research. Every dog rescued from a laboratory is a reminder of the possibilities for change, and a call to action to prevent future suffering. The time has come for Canada to invest in science that does not rely on animals.

Please consider speaking with your MP about animal free science. These innovative methods have already proven to be more effective for humans, less expensive - and of course would save the lives of so many animals.
