Stop the Import of Cambodian Macaques into Canada for Research

Airdrie yard becomes gateway to freedom for 14 rescued beagles

Every year, thousands of long-tailed macaques—many believed to be taken illegally from the wild—are imported into Canadian research laboratories.

Wild-caught long-tailed macaques are among the most heavily trafficked primates in the world. In countries such as Cambodia, their capture—often involving brutal methods that tear apart entire family groups—has been linked to the global research trade. Canada is one of the destinations for these animals, imported primarily for laboratory use.

Despite being listed as Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, Canada continues to permit their importation for experimentation. This practice inflicts immense suffering on wild populations and raises serious ethical concerns.

WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO SIGN THE NEW HOUSE OF COMMONS E-PETITION (e-7020) before April 2026 and join us in supporting The Animal Alliance of Canada’s campaign to TAKE ACTION IN STRENGTHENING OVERSIGHT AND CONTROL OF ENDANGERED MONKEY IMPORTS INTO CANADA FOR RESEARCH.

Please consider speaking with your MP about animal free science. These innovative methods have already proven to be more effective for humans, less expensive - and of course would save the lives of so many animals.
