National Institutes of Health – Reducing Animal Use in Research

Beagles Released to Foster Homes from Canadian Vet College

Will this encouraging news cross the border?

The first sentence of this article reads like this: “The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is adopting a new initiative to expand innovative, human-based science while reducing animal use in research.” The second paragraph reads: “For decades, our biomedical research system has relied heavily on animal models. With this initiative, NIH is ushering in a new era of innovation,” said NIH Director Dr. Jay Bhattacharya.

This is where the hope lies, however, it is lying in a country that is not our own. The Canadian Centre for Alternatives to Animal Methods in Canada recently shut its doors, having never received government funding for their work.

The Beagle Alliance advocates for animal free science and has been told that facilities will not release dogs to us for this reason – and they are not bound by law to do so, but only subject to the suggestion by a voluntary regulatory body – the Canadian Council on Animal Care.

It is understandable that research facilities want to distance themselves from the potential backlash that has come from animal right’s organizations, however is there not a way in which, as a society we can come together and focus on our common goals – what is best for the animals and what is best for the humans?

This is not just an animal welfare issue, it is a societal one. If using technology increases the potential for life saving treatments and cures AND reduces animal harm, is that not a WIN WIN?

It is our hope that Canada follows other countries and starts to encourage and fund animal free research and it is our hope that the facilities will let down their guards and allow us a seat at the table – so that many of the animals currently in facilities across Canada can go on to live out their lives in an environment fitting of their nature.

In the meantime, The Beagle Alliance will continue to assist where needed and help place former research beagles from U.S. testing facilities into loving homes, and we will continue to advocate for animal free science and the release of animals after study. NO JUDGMENT, NO SHAME – just a community of people coming together for the animals.

This is our hope.

Please consider speaking with your MP about animal free science. These innovative methods have already proven to be more effective for humans, less expensive - and of course would save the lives of so many animals.
