Love Letter to Arthur

To my sweet Arthur,

While my home had room for another dog, I wasn’t sure my heart was ready. One night in April, while watching the local news, I saw a story about ten little beagles who had arrived in Calgary after a very long journey. My heart told me it was time. I reached out to the Beagle Alliance, only to find out that all the dogs had already been placed. While I was disappointed, I was happy to know they all had somewhere to go.

Then, late in May, the call came—you needed a home. We didn’t hesitate, and once again, you made a long journey from BC, back to where you started in Calgary. I truly had no idea what to expect. All of our past and current dogs—including your big brother, George—were large breeds. Not only were you just a little guy, but you were also a beagle—a breed I knew nothing about.

During your first few days, you barely got off the couch, and I had never seen a dog shed as much as you! But I could tell we were already forming a strong bond. You seemed to enjoy it when I sat next to you and rubbed your ears.

On day four, you got off the couch like a brave boy and looked toward the stairs leading to the second floor, likely wondering where we disappeared to when we left the room. It took 20 minutes to teach you how to go up and down a full set of carpeted stairs. My heart was so full.

Over the next few months, we experienced many more firsts together. The look on your face and the way your tail wags for praise whenever you tried something new filled me with joy. The jury is still out on -20°C weather and blizzards—but we have time.

It took a few months for you to discover your beagle voice, but now you’ve mastered your “Baroo!” We hear your voice when you’re excited, happy, or trying to convince George to chase you. Baroos happen daily, which tells me we’re doing something right—you feel the love in your new home.

I know we still have many firsts ahead of us, and I promise to always be patient and stand by your side through any scary moments. I love your playful personality, your bravery, your ability to watch and learn so quickly from George, and most of all—your amazing cuddles.

Arthur, I love you so much!
