CCAC Animal Data Report 2023

Beagles Released to Foster Homes from Canadian Vet College

The Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) Animal Data Report 2023 is now available – SEE BELOW.

This is a reporting mechanism and if in fact the numbers indicate an increase in reporting and transparency, that is a great thing.

Having said that, even though the overall number of animals used in 2023 was down (3,128,943) than 2022 (3,521,143), there are some concerning numbers.

There were 16,151 dogs reportedly used in 2023 – AN ASTOUNDING 55% HIGHER than in 2022, in which 10,417 dogs were used.

Most are euthanized after study – many could go on from LAB to LOVE instead!

It is the position of The Beagle Alliance that collaboration is the key to making a difference for animals in research in Canada and we want to work with the CCAC in unity to discuss the release of eligible animals and the systematic reduction of animal use in science which would employ animal free methods as an accurate, innovative, cost effective, and less harmful way of doing research and finding cures.

We also believe that even though the overall number of animals used in Canada in research is slightly down, the over 50% increase in dogs used can speak volumes to the Canadians out there who think of the dogs as best friends and family members.

Let’s rally those people to gain a majority who want to see BIG change in 2025 for animals in research.

We encourage you to listen to our presentation Dogs as the Gateway for Change in Canada  at this year’s Canadian Animal Law Conference and please share this post.
