It’s World Week for Animals in Laboratories\, beginning today. By Wednesday\, we mark National Beagle Day\, and on Friday\, World Day for Animals in Laboratories. Together\, these days form something more than a date on a calendar—they form a call to pay attention. \nBecause behind laboratory doors across North America\, the story continues. \nAnd more often than not\, that story belongs to a beagle. \nBeagles are chosen for research not by accident\, but by design. They are gentle. Trusting. Remarkably forgiving. Their small size makes them easier to house and to handle. \nDogs in research is a reality and more people are beginning to see it. This year alone\, awareness has grown. \nBUT here is the part that often surprises people: in many cases\, it is legal. In both Canada and the United States\, the use of animals in research is governed by laws that permit these practices under regulated conditions. \nWhich brings us to something both sobering and empowering. \nIf the system allows it\, then the system must be where change happens. \nAs citizens\, we are not bystanders. In a democracy\, governments are not distant entities—they are extensions of the people they serve. Real\, lasting change for animals will not come from outrage alone. It will come from unity. From collaboration. From finding common ground and turning shared concern into legislative action. \nIt means speaking up. Writing letters. Supporting policies that require adoption pathways for animals once research ends. Advocating for stronger protections and\, just as importantly\, for the enforcement of those protections when they are violated. \nChange\, the kind that lasts\, is built slowly—like laying stones for a road that others will one day walk. \nBut this week is not only about what still needs to change. It is also about what has already changed. \nIt is about the dogs who have stepped out of laboratories and into loving arms\, arms prepared to help with their transition. It’s about the dogs who have traded sterile enclosures for soft beds\, who have learned the language of kindness\, who have discovered grass under their paws and the simple joy of being safe or having a toy. \nThese are the dogs who have gone from LAB to LOVE! \nThey are not just success stories. They are living proof that another ending is possible. \nSo today\, take a moment. Celebrate how far we’ve come. Honour the lives that have already been transformed. And then\, gently but firmly\, ask the question that carries us forward: \nWhat will we do—together—to create that same future for the ones still waiting? \nBecause they are still waiting.
